Five Minutes to Save a Life

Tri-County EMC linemen have recently completed their annual Pole Top Rescue training. This essential certification, required for all electric cooperative lineworkers in North Carolina, prepares crews to respond swiftly and safely to life-threatening emergencies in the field.

During the training scenario, linemen simulate a real-life rescue: they must communicate for emergency help, don climbing gear, ascend a 20-foot utility pole, set up a rope system, and safely lower a 105-pound mannequin, which represents an injured coworker, to the ground. Once the “injured” lineman is secured and lowered, CPR and first aid are administered—all within five minutes to meet certification requirements.

“Safety is our top priority,” said Ron Miller, Line Superintendent at Tri-County EMC. “This training reinforces muscle memory and prepares our crews to respond without hesitation. It’s not just a test—it’s practice for saving lives.”

Pole Top Rescue is a cornerstone of the cooperative’s safety program, and successful completion is mandatory for all lineworkers. Tri-County EMC proudly recognizes the skill, speed, and dedication exhibited by its linemen during this rigorous training.

This year, Landon Stroud completed the drill in the shortest time. He will represent Tri-County EMC at the Statewide Pole Top Rescue Competition hosted by North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives in the fall.

“We’re proud of our team and their commitment to safety,” Miller added. “This training can be the difference between life and death on the line.”
