Two local students spent part of their summer sharpening their basketball skills and building leadership abilities thanks to Cooperative All-Stars Sports Camp scholarships sponsored by Tri-County EMC.
Sophia Westbrook, a rising sixth-grade student at Grantham Middle School, and Shyla Walker, a rising seventh-grade student at Ambleside Prep Academy, were selected to attend the Wolfpack Women's Basketball Camp at NC State University. The week-long experience gave the students the opportunity to train alongside talented athletes while learning from collegiate coaches and student-athletes from one of North Carolina's premier basketball programs.
"These students are not only talented athletes but also outstanding representatives of their communities," said Deidra Grantham, manager of marketing and communications at Tri-County EMC. "We are proud to partner with North Carolina's electric cooperatives and NC State University to provide opportunities that help young people grow as athletes, leaders, and teammates."
Sophia and Shyla were among more than 50 students from electric cooperative communities across North Carolina who received Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarships. Throughout the week, participants developed their basketball fundamentals while gaining valuable lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and leadership—skills that extend far beyond the basketball court.
The Cooperative All-Stars Sports Program is one of the many ways Tri-County EMC invests in the future of the communities it serves by providing meaningful opportunities for local youth.
