As students head back to the classroom and families settle into new routines, it's the perfect time to review important safety habits—including electrical safety. Whether children are studying at home, waiting for the school bus, or walking to class, a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe throughout the school year.
Create a safe homework space
Before homework begins, check lamps, chargers and other electronics for worn or damaged cords. Replace any frayed cords, avoid overloading outlets or power strips, and never run electrical cords under rugs or furniture where heat can build up.
Charge devices the right way
From laptops to tablets and phones, students rely on technology every day. Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and unplug them when they're not in use. Avoid charging devices on beds, couches or other soft surfaces, where heat can become trapped and create a fire hazard.
Talk about outdoor electrical safety.
Remind children to stay away from power lines, utility poles, transformers and other electrical equipment. They should never climb trees near power lines or fly kites in areas where lines are overhead. If they ever see a downed power line, they should stay far away, warn others to keep their distance, and immediately notify an adult.
Slow down in school zones.
As school buses return to the roads, drivers should use extra caution in school zones and neighborhoods. Watch carefully for children walking, biking or crossing the street, and always stop for school buses when required by law.
Practice safe habits at home.
Teach children to plug in and unplug electronics by gripping the plug—not the cord—to prevent damage. Keep food and drinks away from electrical devices, and remind younger children never to place objects inside electrical outlets.
